Festival
What was once a small block party has evolved into an annual festival. The Four Blocks International Festival is held in early June as a tribute to all of the people who have lived and worked in the neighborhood. With such a variety of cultures, it is a vivid experience. The festival is centered in the 700 and 800 blocks of East Fourth Street, the soul of the neighborhood. Here all types of people taste, beat to the music, get reacquainted with ethnic tunes, step to the dances, and interact with street performers.
Each year local performers are selected to celebrate the multi-cultural roots of the neighborhood. Performances might include: Mexican folk dance, Tango and Salsa lessons, break dancing, ethnic storytelling, Mariachi, magic, marionettes, painting faces, painting murals, steel drum concert, bongo music, belly dancing, and more!
Local businesses participate by welcoming people into their stores. Each year a basket of goods worth over a hundred dollars is given to one lucky winner who visits designated stores in Four Blocks International. Whoever wins can enjoy food, music, tools, products, and services for an entire year.
Capture the experience. And if the festival is not reason enough to visit the neighborhood, visit The Great Southside Sale, held the same day at 4th and Buchanan Streets. Sort through mounds of used clothing to find the best bargains of quality donated goods from Lehigh University students. Be a good steward of the earth, create a cool wardrobe and have plenty of fun!
The 2008 festival will be held Saturday, June 7th from noon to 6 p.m., rain or shine. Sale hours are 10 am to 3 pm.
